Blackburne Shilling Gambit

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nd4 4. Nxe5

Sprung by Black, inside the Italian Game: Blackburne-Kostić Gambit. The move that invites it is Nxe5.

Taking the free-looking pawn on e5 invites Qg5, and the greedy follow-up 5. Nxf7 loses to a smothered-style mate. White should just castle or play 4. Nxd4.

Sprung by White, inside the Caro-Kann Defense. The move that invites it is Ngf6.

The most common trap at club level. 5...Ngf6 blocks the e-file sight of the king one move too late: Nd6 is mate because exd6 is pinned.

Sprung by White, inside the King's Pawn Game: Damiano Defense. The move that invites it is fxe5.

2...f6 is the oldest recorded opening mistake. Accepting the knight loses to the h5 check; the king walk ends with White winning heavy material.

Sprung by Black, inside the Queen's Gambit Declined: Modern Variation, Knight Defense. The move that invites it is Nxd5.

The d5 pawn is poisoned: 6. Nxd5 Nxd5 wins a piece because the b4 check regains the queen. One of the oldest Queen's Gambit traps.

Sprung by Black, inside the Englund Gambit: Main Line. The move that invites it is Qxb2.

The whole point of the Englund. After 6. Bc3 Bb4 White must not pin back with 7. Qd2: the queen lands on c1 with mate. 6. Nc3 avoids everything.

The knight on g4 is bait. Taking it opens the h-file and the queen arrives on h4 with mating threats against the castled king.

Sprung by White, inside the Italian Game: Two Knights Defense, Knight Attack, Normal Variation. The move that invites it is Nxd5.

Recapturing with the knight on d5 walks into the knight sacrifice on f7. The king is dragged to e6 and White's attack is worth more than the piece. Black should play 5...Na5 instead.

Sprung by Black, inside the Queen's Gambit Declined: Albin Countergambit, Lasker Trap. The move that invites it is Bxb4.

An Albin Countergambit classic featuring an underpromotion to a knight with check. 6. Bxb4 loses material by force; White must take with 6. fxe3.

Grabbing the queen after 5. Nxe5 loses to a forced mate in two. Black limits the damage with 5...Nxe5, but after 6. Qxg4 White regains the piece and keeps an extra pawn.

Sprung by Black, inside the Ruy Lopez: Berlin Defense, Anti-Berlin Variation, Mortimer Variation. The move that invites it is Nxe5.

The retreat 4...Ne7 baits 5. Nxe5. After 5...c6 the bishop is attacked, and the natural retreat 6. Ba4 loses the e5 knight to the a5 check, as the line shows. White can bail out with 6. Nc4 or 6. Nd3 and stay roughly level, so the trap is a practical gamble rather than a refutation.

Sprung by Black, inside the Ruy Lopez: Morphy Defense, Modern Steinitz Defense. The move that invites it is Qxd4.

After 8. Qxd4 c5 the pawn wave c5-c4 buries the b3 bishop; the queen checks in the line shown only delay it. The saving idea came earlier: 8. Bd5 first, hitting the a8 rook, and only then recapturing on d4.

Copying White in the Petrov fails: after 4. Qe2 the knight must not retreat into the discovered check 5. Nc6+, which wins the queen. Black needs 3...d6 first.
